I've received enough supporting comments that I've decided to investigate exactly which bills can be put on credit card for automatic payment.
I still am not comfortable with automatic debit directly from my checking account - although I do have a heloc for one of my houses on it - but the lender provided a reduced rate if i did it.
I'll follow-up with a list of vendors I can auto-pay and if I remember in a few months see if it is in fact easier.
