Is sitemeter working?

I've noticed over the last few days that sitemeter is not providing real time site visitation statistics - this is important to me - I'd like to see if people are visiting the 30s and 40s personal finance carnival. I noticed on some days that the meter had no visitors the entire day and would update to a possibly more accurate amount, the following day. It's quite mysterious.

Do I need to pay more money to have real time statistics? It's a bit frustrating.

What do other bloggers use for their efforts? It seems like sitemeter is the most popular meter out there.

Hi again,

I use sitemeter too but Google Analytics (the former Urchin) has many of the same features plus a couple I think are important too.

The first is a measurement of the "bounce" factor for a page (i.e. when a page is the only one visited during a session).

The second is visitor loyalty (i.e. returning users and when their last visit was).

This is another good one. Possibly even better than sitemeter.

7 posts today?! That must be your blogs records for posts in one day...

I like statcounter.com myself. Good statistics, and the free version will give you decent stats for nothing.

Thanks for the wonderful recommendations. I've already signed up for google analytics and will sign up for the others as well.
G Analytics looks great - too bad it doesn't have a blogger widget I can drop in.

Sitemeter works fine here, but I had some strange statistics once as well. A day later it was ironed out and even the crappy statistics of that one day were allright again.

Steve,

I have google analytics up and running. The reports are gorgeous!!! Thanks for the recommendation.

It did take a few days to get up and running - I questioned if it was broker, but it's worth it. The reports are better than sitemeter's in some ways, but less detailed. My favourites are:
1. the aggregation of referal data to define your best referal sources.
2. the separation of new visitors from old visitors
3. the ability to create campaigns / conversion goals is nifty - perhaps if i were an e-commerce site?

I'll try the others soon - maybe this would merit a comparitive article.
